I got a phone call from a young black woman working for an agency collecting reactions to present political choices/selections. I told her I was voting for McCain and I really like Sarah Palin because she didn't abort her downs syndrome baby and because she's supporting her 17 year old daughter who's pregnant. I also told her that I'm a Christian.
She told me she's also a Christian.
I continued my monologue as she listened. I said, "I'm tired of sanitized politics. What politicians have we watched recently who have had to publicly deal with real personal issues...excluding their own sexual promiscuity? I'm looking forward to watching Sarah Palin's life unfold in real time for all of us to observe. I know it makes people uncomfortable, but she's living her faith."
The young women asked, "What about in the case of rape."
"What about it?" I asked. "We're all descended from women who were raped. Somewhere back in our ancestry there was a rape and we are the product of that violation. The worst part, though, is not having enough faith in God, that he will get us through. That's why I like Sarah Palin so much. We are used to having control of our lives and sanitizing our lives so they look good to others or are more convenient for us, but that's not the way God would have us behave."
"What about if your step-father molests and rapes you and you get pregnant?"
"Well, If I'm talking to someone who believes in Jesus then that person needs to stand behind the shield of faith. You don't leave your shield in the corner, you pick it up and stand behind it because it extinguishes the fiery darts of the enemy. I still would not advocate abortion because the baby shouldn't be punished for the sins of the father, and the mother is innocent too. Having faith in God doesn't mean being selective about what problems you bring to Him. You bring ALL your problems to Him and He will make a way. Self-control and Faithfulness are the unsung fruits of the Holy Spirit. We have the self-control to make the right decision and we have the faithfulness to see it through. If a person has already had an abortion they can be forgiven if they repent and they will see that child again in heaven. Jesus died for ALL sin, and he forgives, but when you realize your abortion was wrong and repent, then abortion is not an option, so self-control must be.
"The reason people have abortions is fear. Fear is the opposite of Faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. God is Love so if we are the temple of God because Jesus lives in us, then there is no room for fear only faith. He will work out our problems because we belong to him. Perfect love casts out fear. If you love God then you will love the child he's allowed to live in your womb. Sarah Palin is not afraid first because her love for God. That Perfect Love is reflected in her love for her son Trig and her pregnant daughter and has cast out her fear. Perfect love casts out fear. Where there is love there isn't fear. She loves our country in the same way.
We were both quiet for a while then she said, "Well, you've given me a lot to think about."
We said good-bye.
